Eye Make-Up: The Cat Eye

Eye make up has been used dating back to the ancient Egyptians. The women would rub kohl onto their eyes. Originally, it was thought that darkening around the eye would protect from the sun. This has since evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry. Pencil liner, gel liner, liquid liner, eye shadow, cream eye shadow, eye primer, mascara, not to mention eyebrow pencils. This weekend, all of those products culminated in the reproduction of the “cat eye” look. This look has gone through different phases, and has resurfaced time and again. When earlier in the 19th century, it was used in theatrical productions to indicate an exotic culture. Julie Newmar (“she was so statuesque”) owned this look after performing as Cat Woman in the Batman television series. After her, starlets and common girls alike used the look to augment and give an exotic flare to their facial features. Audrey Hepburn then gave the look a different spin in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. That look continues to be replicated by women around the world. Although this look does invoke a sense of nostalgia, it can be relevant to any occasion. The classic cat eye uses black liquid liner, curled eyelashes and mascara to create a more almond shape and elongated lash line. The eye shadow color used on your lid can also modernize the look. Apart from the actual execution of the “winged liner” the selection of eye shadow depends on complexion and clothing. This weekend I used the classic cat eye while attending a family affair – it got a lot of positive attention and I received many compliments.

Take a look!
